Wrightson Cup Doubles Tournament cancelled

To Doubles Squash Community,

After waiting as long as possible to make this decision and hoping for a better outcome, I am sad to announce that the 2021 edition of the Wrightson Cup Doubles Tournament is cancelled for the health and safety of the community.  The current pandemic situation, policies and mandates make tournament planning, staging and competitive play uncertain.  Under these conditions the Squash Committee didn’t feel we could adequately host the tournament in the manner that we would like and which we are all accustomed to.

The Wrightson Tournament has been held annually at the Multnomah Athletic Club since 1966 when it was founded by Thomas Wrightson and at that time called the Oregon State Doubles Tournament.  The tournament was later renamed to honor Wrightson.  He was a leader in West coast squash for decades.  He was president of the PAC Coast Squash 1970-71 and secretary 1973-79.  Wrightson was also a prominent national figure being a long term board and committee member of the USSRA and the first USSRA President west of the Mississippi leading the organization to a truly national level in 1979-1980.   He received the USSRA Presidents Cup in 1983 and the Stewart Brauns in 1991 joining only two others who have been honored with both of the US Squash’s highest individual awards.

While this is sad news, we look forward to the fall of 2022 when we hope to once again host this wonderful tournament honoring Thomas Wrightson and welcoming back previous friends, participants and new competitors to the Multnomah Athletic Club.
