East Versus West
by Nick-At-Will
Isn't it wonderful (in these days of quarantine and isolation), that 18 junior squash players have been presented with US Squash Junior Sportsmanship Awards...and Honorable Mentions for the 2019-2020 season recently! However, we think it's odd that of the 18 players recognized, 15 of them are from the east coast, while only two are from the west coast, with one from Texas! More than that, of all the Award recipients (not the honorably mentioned) none of them are U.S. Squash nationally-ranked below #26! In no special order, e.g. #'s 6, 2, 26, 11, 10, 13, 2, 20!
And...of those 10 boys and girls receiving honorable mention, nine are from the east coast, with only one from the west coast, that one being one from Southern California. Could this possibly mean...that unless you're ranked in the top 32 in the country, that you're incapable of being a good or top squash sportsperson, or deserve the award!? We hope not!
It seems that there is still a strong disproportion of east versus west coast junior squash-player (deserved) recognition! These Awards were determined based on community feedback..but feedback from whom? We believe it was from the east-coast squash-playing community!
Disproportionate?...we think so!
