A Brief History of the Pacific Coast Doubles Squash Championships

A Brief History of the Pacific Coast Doubles Squash Championships

by Brian Covernton, Gary Johnson, and John Lau

2007 Champions and Finalists Jen Holleran, Missy Smit, Berkeley Revenaugh, Lee Belknap
The history of Doubles Squash on the Pacific Coast began in 1964 when the first court was built at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon due to the generosity of Portland lumberman and Multnomah Athletic Club squash player Aubrey R. Watzek.

The squash building contained two hardball singles court and one doubles court.
In the early 70’s, Portland enjoyed a doubles boom when courts were constructed at the Multnomah Athletic Club, at Reed College -  again due to the generosity of Watzek - and at Portland State University. The doubles court at Reed most notable feature was the beautiful unpainted natural ceiling evoking the environmental splendor of the Pacific Northwest.
Doubles Squash in Western Canada began in 1967 when the Men's Athletic and Recreation Centre in Vancouver constructed the first doubles court in its downtown squash complex. Soon after, in 1970, the Vancouver Racquets Club and the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club both expanded their facilities by constructing doubles courts. In 1987, the Chancery Squash Club built a court. In 1990,  Evergreen Squash Club built a court. 1994 included construction of a new court at the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver.  In 2000 at Sports Central (new club built in Richmond B.C.) one more court was added to the Pacific Coast roster. Sport Central's doubles court closed in 2012.
The University Club of San Francisco built the first doubles court in Northern California in 1975 and added another in 2003.  The City’s Olympic Club is now in the fold of the Pacific Coast with their new doubles court built in 2006. Los Angeles' Jonathan Club boasts two courts.
Along with the number of courts, increased tournament play has been commensurate.
In 1969, Vancouver hosted the longest running international squash doubles event in the world: the Lapham Cup and Grant Trophy matches between the United States and Canada. The advent of courts on the Pacific Coast stoked the ambitions to host future national tournaments in doubles, singles hardball and singles softball on the Pacific Coast.  Up until then, for the most part,National Championships were played in the eastern part of North America.
Vancouver hosted subsequent Lapham-Grant matches in 1989, 1999 and 2013. The Lapham-Grant matches were also played in Portland in 1974 and in San Francisco in 1978, 1990 and 2004. (The event is now called the Lapham, Grant, Wilkens, and Crawford Trophy Matches.)
The Canadian National Doubles have been held 5 times in Vancouver, along with the Canadian Veterans Doubles Championship when that tournament was held as a separate event.   The Canadian Doubles Championships was held in Vancouver 1984 (VRC), 1990 VRC), 1994 (Evergreen/Hollyburn), 2000 (VRC), 2003 (Hollyburn/Evergreen), and 2009 (VLTBC).

The Canadian Mixed Doubles was  hosted in Vancouver three times: in 1988 (VRC), 1993 (VLTBC) and 1997 (VLTBC).
In 1991, as one of the many significant events held during the Club's centennial year, the Multnomah Athletic Club hosted the U.S. National Doubles Tournament, The MAC again hosted the U.S. National Doubles in 2001 and the U.S. Mixed Doubles in 2005.

First held in 1966, the longest running event on record and is still being contested has been the Oregon State Championships, now called the Wrightson Cup.

The history of the Pacific Coast Championships began in Portland in 1972 and for the first five years, the event had just a Championship draw.
In 1977, a men's 40+ division was added to the event; the same year that the Championship was played in San Francisco for the first time.

While the Veterans tournament was played as a separate event, it was in 1981 in Vancouver when both the Championships and the Veterans Class were played together setting the stage for the current consolidated format with the tournament rotating every year between Portland, Vancouver and San Francisco. (There was one year when the Coast was held in Denver.)

A Men's 50+ tournament was added in 1980.

A Men's 60+ section was added in 1991.

A Mixed event was added in 1981 (Vancouver) and a Women's class was added in 1985.

Since 1972, a Division II class (C and D Players) has also been played most years.

Many teams have distinguished themselves during the history of the “Coast”.
In the 80's, San Francisco Bay Area's Kris Surano and Andre Naniche (a past President of US Squash), stood out above the rest. These two were ranked in the US Squash top twenty ten different times and achieved their highest ranking of #5 on four separate occasions. They were Coast Champions in 1981 and 1983 and have been Finalists in four other years.

Paul Gessling, Field Pickering

The notable team in the 90's was Vancouver’s Brad Desaulniers and Eric Barclay with wins in 1991, 1995, and 1996.  Deasaulniers won with Boston's Tom Poor in 1990. He was also Canadian Doubles Champion with Poor in 1983, 1984, and 1990.

In the 90’s, the Women's Division was dominated by three Multnomah Club players, Trisha Harding, Kate LaGrand, and Marjin Wall rotating with one another in subsequent years.

In the first decade of the new millennium, the inter-regional team of Tony Catalan Jr. and San Francisco's Kevin Jernigan won 6 Coast titles.
The Pacific Coast Mixed event has put together some excellent mixed pairings over the years.

2016 Mixed Finals - Doug Prezzano, Ally Pearson, J.P. Rothie, Phoebe Trubowitz
In the 80’s, San Francisco’s Brett Elebash and Kris Surano were prominent, with each player winning the division twice, once each with other players. The preeminent Mixed team in the mid 90's was Vancouver's Scott Kidd and Portland's Marjin Wall winning four times - 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1999.  In 1996, Wall won with Tony Catalan Jr. Proving his mettle, Catalan won the Mixed with 4 different partners in 1992, 1996, 2002, 2003, and 2006.

Erik Wohlgemuth, Kevin Jernigan, Tony Catalan Jr., Alex Dean
Since the early ‘90s, 14 “Coasts” were won by teams or players from the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1994, John Lau and Steve Heath were crowned Champions. Keen Butcher and Richard Hashim in 1998 and 2004. Butcher again with John Lau in 2000.  Tony Catalan Jr. of Portland and Kevin Jernigan of San Francisco had a great run winning in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009 which was interrupted by Erik Wohlgemuth and Alex Dean winning in 2007 and 2008. Wohlgemuth and Jernigan teamed together to take the 2010 title. Eric Pearson won in 2011, 2012, and 2013.  Peter Karlen in 2012, 2013, 2016.

Eric Pearson

Will  Fratt, Peter Karlen

The Multnomah Club team of Chuck McGinnis and Ron Ragen were champions in 1978 and 1980 and made the finals on three other occasions, in addition to winning the 40+ event in 1982 and 1983 and the 50+ championship in 1990.  Another great Portland team was John Dennis and Jack Scrivens who won the championship in the early years of 1972 and 1973 and the 40+ event in 1978.
Another superb Multnomah Club team was the late Al McKeown and his partner Mike Davis. This pair won the Pacific Coast Championship in 1974 and 1976 and the 40+ event in 1986 and 1987. In that year, they were ranked first in the Veteran's class in the United States.
One other team has won twice. John Hungerford and Richard Jackson of Vancouver took the title in 1987 and 1988. Hungerford teamed with Victor Harding in 1979 for a third win.

Bart Mcguire, Lenny Bernheimer, Jim Gibbons, John Osburn

The fine 40+ team of Sandy Koski and Khalid Mir, the since retired Multnomah Club's teaching professional were champions in 1988, 1989, and 1990 before moving to the 50+ event.  Vancouver’s John Osburn has won the 40+ event four times and held the distinction of being National Champions in the U.S. and Canada in the 60 plus. Equally as notable is Nigel Amon and his six wins in the 40 plus category. Amon also was a 50+ Champion with Bob Puddicombe in the 2000 Canadian Nationals. As a Canadian team in that class, the best record is held by George Morfitt and Roger Ovens who were champions in 1987, 1988, 1989 and who were finalists in 1990.

There were a few Pacific Coast Champions that enjoyed national prominence.
One team was Denver’s Rob Hill and Vancouver’s Andy McDonald. As Princeton teammates, they won the Pacific Coast Championship in 1984 and 1985 and the US Squash National Championship in 1984. From 1994 to 2000, San Francisco’s, Keen Butcher with the great Demer Holleran, won the US National Mixed - a staggering run of 7 consecutive titles. John Lau, also from San Francisco, was the US National 40+ Champion in 1998 with Buffalo’s Gordon Anderson.
Other notables:
In 2015, former US National Singles Champion, Julian Illingworth of Portland won the Men’s Open with the Olympic Club’s Jeff Young and the Mixed with Phoebe Trubowitz of Portland.

Sarah West, Ruth Castellino, Berkeley Revenaugh
2013, San Francisco
Berkeley Revenaugh of San Francisco is a six time Women’s Champion and four time Mixed Champion in the Coast.

With her sister Mary Belknap McKee, they were National Women's 40+ Doubles Champions. In 2013, she partnered with her other sister Lee Belknap to win the US National Women's 40+ Doubles Championships.

Portland's Phoebe Trubowitz won the Women’s and Mixed for five titles total.
Former World #1 and 2015 World Mixed Doubles Champion, Viktor Berg of Vancouver, with Jason Del Vicario, won the 2017 Open Championship.

Dick Rice, Bart McGuire
In the Veteran’s classes, nationally ranked Bart McGuire from Arizona, won three 50+, four 60+, and four 70+ Championships.

Ruth Castellino, Berkeley Revenaugh, Alex Dean, Justin Todd

In 2017, the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships was held in Vancouver at the Hollyburn Country Club on the weekend of January 24-29. Around 110 players entered the event, with teams from Denver, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, Portland, and Calgary.

The highlight or lowlight of the tournament was an unexpected fire drill on Saturday afternoon. To cap the day off, there was an excellent dinner at the Sylvia Hotel, which set the tone and prelude to nail-biting finals on Sunday.

It should go without saying to all of the volunteers who helped out over the course of the tourney - THANK YOU! It could not have been done without each and everyone of you.

Beryl Johnson, who organized the many volunteers was especially helpful. Jeff Boag, Cathy Covernton, Hollyburn Country Club, and the starting referees were instrumental in the success of the "Coast".
In 2019, the Coast was held in San Francisco at the University Club.  It was the most well attended and the most successful Coast ever to be held at the City by the Bay, in part because of the newly-constructed court at the Olympic Club which provided 3 courts in San Francisco for play; thereby allowing more court time for the timely completion of the tournament and a full complement of consolation play.
A healthy turnout of over 80 players competed - as good of a sign as any that squash doubles is a growing sport on the west coast gaining popularity. Most notably, the success of the 2010 version of the Coast was the result of the large contingent traveling down the Pacific Coast from Vancouver, 20 players strong, that made their way down to San Francisco making the Pacific Coast Doubles Squash Championship a bona fide international event.  An interesting side note of the event was that four of the finals (A, Women’s, Mixed, and 40) had a San Francisco team vs. a team from Vancouver with San Francisco winning all four finals.

James Clark, Peter Karlen, Porter Drake, Jeff Young
2016 Finals, San Francisco
In 2011, the "Coast" was held in Vancouver and drew 115 entrants.
2018 turned out to be an eventful year on the Pacific Coast. The “Coast” was held at Portland’s Multnomah Athletic Club and in Vancouver, the Canadian Doubles Championships was ably hosted by the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club.

Peter Gaynor

Tom Wrightson, Brett Elebash

The inaugural Pacific Coast Doubles Squash Championships was held in 1972 in Portland, Oregon.  With each passing decade, notable stewards sheparded the continuation of the event. During the 70’s and 80’s, Portland’s Tom Wrightson and San Francisco’s Peter Gaynor, with their promotion and record keeping, actively kept the “Coast” uppermost in prominence in player’s minds and souls.

With their passing, the Pacific Coast Doubles Squash Championships has since maintained it’s annual place on the calendar in January due to the vigilant efforts of three principle individuals: Vancouver’s Brian Covernton, Portland’s Gary Johnson, and San Francisco’s John Lau. These three have preserved its rare inter-regional vibe by maintaining the  tournament rotation held alternatively between Vancouver, Portland, and San Francisco.*

With his encyclopedic historical knowledge of Pacific Coast singles and doubles play aided by his exhaustive memory bank of match anecdotes, Vancouver’s Brian Covernton has been the embodiment of doubles squash on the Pacific Coast.  If one would ask him what the score of the semi-final B match played in 1997, he would know.

Steve Heath, Gary Johnson, Peter Lynch, Habib Rahman

When one speaks of squash in Portland, the name of affable Gary Johnson is spoken in the next breath.

Since the passing of Tom Wrightson, John Lau, the recently retired Squash Professional of San Francisco’s University Club, has been the historian of Pacific Coast singles and doubles lore for over 40 years.

Together, these three players have driven the annual Pacific Coast Doubles Squash Championships to be the most significant doubles event on the west coast.

Shirin Kaufman, Missy Smit, Berkeley Revenaugh, Phoebe Trubowitz
*IMHO, the inter-regional "vibe" of the Coast doubles can be attributed to one constant factor - the continuation of the use of only one ball - the hardball. The Association was a hardball singles organization with it's first Championship played in 1940. The first Doubles Championship on record was played in 1972.

The last hardball Singles Championship on record was played in 1995. The country soon switched over to the softball and with it, in addition to a number of other reasons, came the demise of the Pacific Coast Hardball Singles Championship played in the U.S.

The Canadians officially switched to the softball a few years before the U.S. did. And with that, the Pacific Coast Singles Championship, without their partnership, became a tournament played only in Canada - as a softball event. It has recently been renamed The West Coast Classic.

To this day, the hardball version of the game in Canada and the U.S. continues with Doubles. And the game of Hardball Doubles on the Pacific Coast has continued vibrantly uninterrupted with it's original format, stewardship, and inter-regionality.
