Record Turnout in Older National Age Groups - 1991

MEN'S 35+

The closest final in the 15 divisions in the U.S. Nationals, held at Yale, occurred in the Men's 35+ group. Defending champion and top seed Derrick Niederman of Newton, Mass, was leading 2-0 in games when second seed John Lau of San Francisco staged a comeback that brought the latter the title (10-15), (8-15), 15-9, 15-10, 18-17, reversing the result of the '90 final.

Both finalists dropped a game in the semifinal round, with Lau losing the second stanza to unseeded Ruben Giron of Mexico and Niederman relinquishing the third to Joe Swain.

The final was one of two matches in the 36 player draw that was decided by a single point in the overtime fifth game. Paul Tendler in his second round eliminated Jonathan Whitlock 18-16, 15-9. (11-15), (12-15), 15-14, As Jack Barnaby so frequently has said, every point is a critical one.
